Bridging the skills gap doesn’t mean going on a frantic hiring spree – it means investing in your existing team, leveraging new tech, and prioritising real-life experience. Here’s a quick guide to help you develop a future-proof team:

1. Cultivate talent from within

Instead of always looking outward for new hires, consider training and promoting from within. Internal promotion pathways show that your organisation values its people and is willing to invest in their success. Your best asset might already be on your payroll, and employees who feel valued don’t leave. When they grow alongside your business, they elevate others around them. It’s a win-win for everyone.

2. Remember, technology is your growth partner

Ask yourself: Do you need to hire another employee, or is this a problem your team can solve with a solid AI tool? With the power of AI, your current team can perform tasks that would typically require additional headcount. Keep an eye on emerging productivity tools and make sure your team is trained to leverage them. Don’t be afraid of change. Instead, focus your hiring efforts on scaling the company.

3. Prioritise skills over degrees

Let’s face it: a degree doesn’t truly show what a candidate can do; a person who has learnt on the job can be far more resourceful than one with just academic credentials. If you only hire people with degrees, you are leaving a huge amount of talent on the table, talent that can solve the very problems you have today. Consider hiring individuals with diverse experiences, especially those with backgrounds in dynamic environments such as startups. These candidates often possess a wide range of problem-solving skills and adapt quickly to new challenges.
