Change is constant in the public sector, with restructures, organisational transformations, and evolving ways of working prompting many professionals to take the next step in their careers. But what does career transition in the public sector really look like?

Join Right Management’s webinar at 2pm on Tuesday 11 March, where former MPs Hannah Bardell and Rt Hon Ian Blackford will share their experiences, challenges and surprises from navigating career change.

Navigating change: from surviving to thriving

Change can feel unsettling. While you can’t control company decisions, you can choose how to respond. Here are three areas to focus on for anyone experiencing workplace uncertainty.

Position yourself for success

It’s normal to feel anxious, but the key is to turn that energy into productive action. Instead of reacting impulsively, focus on building your ‘professional insurance policy’ by documenting:

  • Your work: Track key projects, responsibilities and stakeholders. Identify tasks that are critical to the business.
  • Achievements: Be specific. Quantify your impact, such as reducing response times or improving satisfaction rates.
  • Your network: Recognise who depends on you and who you depend on. Strong connections make you more valuable.
  • Unique strengths: Highlight any specialised skills or knowledge that set you apart, like managing critical systems or key clients.

This record not only proves your value but also prepares you for future opportunities, inside or outside the organisation.

Be honest with yourself

Self-reflection is essential. Ask yourself:

  • Where do you want to be in two years? Will these changes help or hinder that goal?
  • What excites you about the changes? Can you find opportunities within them?
  • If you had to find a new role tomorrow, what would it be?

Surviving change isn’t enough – clarity on your aspirations ensures you make the right decisions for your future.

Embrace a growth mindset

Organisational stability is a myth, but personal stability comes from adaptability. Develop transferable skills, nurture your network, and remain open to new opportunities. Remember, you control your career narrative. What seems like a crisis could be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for - if you’re prepared to see it that way.
